The Verrazano Bridge, named for the Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazano,  is the longest bridge in the Americas. Its massive towers can be seen throughout most of the New York metropolitan area, including from spots in all five boroughs of NYC.

This iconic structure marks the gateway to New York Harbor. Since 1976, the Verrazano Bridge has been the starting point of the New York City Marathon.

On the afternoon of July 21st, an elite group of swimmers will celebrate the Verrazano Bridge by swimming from Brooklyn to Staten Island in the shadow of its mile plus span.

Check In Time:
One hour prior to swim

Start Time:
1:00 PM.  All swimmers will start no later than 1:15 PM to optimize slack tide

Backup Date:
7/22/2012

Start Location:
Eastern end of the Verrazano Bridge, Brooklyn

Finish Location:
Western end of the Verrazano Bridge, Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island

Swimmer Start:
Swimmers will arrive at Brooklyn start point approximately one hour prior to Swim

Swimmer Finish:
Swimmers will emerge from water on shore at Fort Wadsworth

Time Limit:
1 hour

Age Requirements:
18 years and over

Experience Requirement:
Registration for this event is by invitation in 2012
